Shangri-La Series
Shangri-La is an ethereal utopia where its inhabitants spend an eternity in a beautiful, harmonious natural setting, unaware of the outside world. It is often the subject of legends or fairy tales in different cultures, so many people have looked for or dreamed about it, even though they know it does not exist.
In my mixed-media series Shangri-La, the puppets and installations are made from Sculpy (oven clay), fabric, yarn, plastic and Styrofoam. I chose puppets characters to represent scenes from that fabled land because I wanted give concrete form to abstract concepts like “eternity” and “nature.”
In this work, all the materials I’ve employed are inorganic, scientific substances— for example, Sculpy contains PVC, and the fabric I used contains polyester—suggesting, ironically, that such an eternal paradise can only be created with the aid of science and technology.
